Health insurance coverage disparities in Prince George’s County, Maryland

Eighteen years of public coverage data (2006–2024) from Census SAHIE, ACS tables S2701 and B27001, and the county’s HealthZone portal, cleaned and modeled in Power Query and Power BI. The deliverable was an interactive dashboard with six visuals, year and geography slicers and a ZIP-code choropleth, plus five outreach recommendations written for county health partners rather than for analysts.

  • 11.2%of county residents were uninsured in 2024, against 7.2% statewide. Down from 22.6% in 2006, but the gap to Maryland has not closed.
  • 37%uninsured in ZIP 20783 (Langley Park and Adelphi), more than three times the county rate.
  • ~31%of Hispanic/Latino residents uninsured, versus roughly 5% of White and Black residents.
  • 18.3%uninsured among ages 35 to 44, the heaviest burden of any working-age group.
  • 23%of insured residents rely on public coverage alone, up from 20% in 2016.
How the analysis was built
  • Seven federal and county datasets (Census SAHIE, ACS S2701 and B27001, PG County HealthZone) covering 2006 to 2024, wrangled in Power Query.
  • Data model and DAX visuals built in Power BI Desktop, with year and geography slicers driving every visual.
  • ZIP-code (ZCTA) choropleth to show where coverage gaps concentrate.
  • Six visuals: trend over time, geography, race and ethnicity, age group, coverage type, and the comparison to Maryland.
What we recommended
  • ZIP-level enrollment events in 20783 and neighboring codes rather than county-wide campaigns.
  • Spanish-language Medicaid and Marketplace materials, distributed through community organizations already trusted in Langley Park.
  • Partnerships with employers of working-age uninsured residents, where coverage gaps concentrate.
  • Track reliance on public-only coverage, which rose from 20% to 23% between 2016 and 2024, when choosing which programs to promote.
  • Refresh the dashboard as new SAHIE and ACS releases land so outreach can follow change year over year.

All data is public, aggregate and published by federal and county agencies. No patient-level or protected health information was used.
